The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will present the first-ever concert of the Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) this February, marking a significant new chapter in the organization’s commitment to music education and youth development in the region.
The inaugural performance will feature a group of highly dedicated young musicians who have spent months preparing a program of engaging and expressive orchestral music. Under the direction of conductor Dr. Britney Alcine, the ensemble brings together students from across the area who share a serious commitment to musical growth, collaboration, and artistic excellence.
The Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra was created to provide students with meaningful opportunities to study and perform at a high level while learning directly from professional musicians. Through rehearsals, mentorship, and performance, participants develop technical skill, musical confidence, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of an orchestra. Just as importantly, the program emphasizes mutual respect, discipline, and a shared love of music.
“This first concert represents months of focused work and steady progress,” said Dr. Alcine. “These students have grown tremendously, not only as musicians, but as collaborators and leaders. Their dedication is evident in every rehearsal, and this performance is a reflection of that commitment.”
The debut concert also highlights the Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s broader mission to strengthen the region’s cultural life by investing in young artists. By offering close mentorship, high-quality instruction, and regular performance opportunities, the MSYO helps build a strong foundation for future musicians while enriching the wider community.
Tickets for the Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra’s inaugural concert are now available through Eventbrite.
In addition to celebrating its inaugural season, the Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra is currently accepting video audition applications for the 2025–26 Spring Cycle. The auditioned program runs from September through June and is designed primarily for high school–aged students with several years of playing experience. Families facing financial hardship are encouraged to contact the Education Department to learn about available assistance.

As the young musicians prepare to take the stage for the first time, the inaugural concert stands as both a celebration of their hard work and a promising sign of what lies ahead. The Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra’s debut reflects the organization’s long-term investment in education, access, and artistic excellence, and its belief in the power of music to shape confident, engaged, and creative young people.
