The Maryland Symphony Orchestra Presents Annual Holiday Concert:
“Joy to the World”
Hagerstown, MD…Celebrate the season
with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Elizabeth
Schulze, as they present the 2004 Holiday Concert “Joy to the
World” on Saturday, December 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December
19 at 3 p.m. at the Maryland Theatre. In the event of inclement weather,
the concert snow date will be Tuesday, December 21, at 7:00 p.m.
An annual favorite, the Holiday Concert features the Frederick Choral
Arts Society, directed by Lynn Staininger, performing selections from
Handel’s beloved Messiah. MSO Concertmaster Leonid Sushansky,
with MSO string principals Marissa Murphy and Lukasz Szyrner, performs
Corelli’s “Christmas” Concerto, and NBC25’s
Lou Scally reads “A Visit from St. Nick,” with music by
Maryland’s own Robert Lichtenberger.
The Orchestra brings the Holiday to life with selections from Tchaikovsky’s
Nutcracker Suite, Festive Sounds of Hanukah by Bill Holcombe, and
audience favorite Sleigh Ride. The Springfield Middle School Chorus
joins the MSO to for Kwanzaa Child, then performs Holiday Unity, with
lyrics by Springfield Grade 8 students Shannon Draper and Kelsi Phillips.
Sung to the tune of Silver Bells, Holiday Unity is the winner of the
fourth annual Holiday Lyric Contest. Each year the Maryland Symphony
Orchestra, in cooperation with Washington County Public Schools, the
Herald-Mail Newspapers, and the City of Hagerstown, sponsors the lyric-writing
contest, which is open to middle school students in Washington County,
along with the Holiday Poster Contest for area elementary students.
Grand Prize Winner of the Holiday Poster Contest is Emily Seifarth
of Old Forge Elementary Grade 5. Titled “Music is Joy,”
the Grand Prize poster was selected from all entries for Grades 3,
4 and 5. Named as Grade 3 Winner is Nicole Williams of Emma K Doub
Elementary. Honorable Mention is given to Potomac Heights 3rd Grader
Kelley Schmidt. Also from Potomac Heights is Grade 4 Winner Gayla
Miller; Honorable Mention recipient is Victor Valencia from Emma K.
Doub. Winner of the Grade 5 division is Maddasyn McFadden of Hancock
Elementary, with Smithsburg student Esther Chin receiving Honorable
Mention. All Winning and Honorable Mention posters will be displayed
in the Penney’s court area of the Valley Mall during the holiday
season.
A special appearance by Santa Claus and the audience sing-along
complete these festive performances, which have become a much-anticipated
part of holiday season in Washington County and surrounding areas.

Led by Music Director and Conductor Elizabeth Schulze, the Maryland
Symphony Orchestra, now in its 23rd season, is the area’s premiere
