Celebrate Independence Day at Antietam National Battlefield
with Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s 19th Annual Salute to Independence
Celebrate Independence Day with the Maryland
Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Elizabeth Schulze at the 19th
Annual Salute to Independence on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.
at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
Named one of the Top 100 Events in North America, this free evening
of light classical and patriotic music kicks off the MSO’s 23rd
season and Music Director Elizabeth Schulze’s sixth season as
conductor.
Robert Aubry Davis of WETA returns to Antietam as Master of Ceremonies,
and will also narrate Paul Bunyan by Maryland native Robert Lichtenberger.
Mr. Davis is the creator and host of Millennium of Music, Songs for
Aging Children, The European Centuries and On Holiday, and is well
known as host and moderator of the Emmy award-winning weekly arts
discussion program Around Town. Mr. Davis currently serves as Program
Director for VOX, the all-vocal classical channel, and The Village
folk channel, both on XM Satellite Radio.
Other special guests include Miss Western Maryland, Tiffany Hawbaker,
performing the Star Spangled Banner and Sing Out America, and tenor
Corey Evan Rotz, who will join the MSO for Aaron Copland’s Old
American Songs. Rotz, who is marking his tenth consecutive season
with the Washington National Opera, has also performed with the National
Symphony Orchestra, the Alexandria Symphony, and at recitals throughout
the United States and Europe.
Leonid Sushansky, Concertmaster of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra,
will perform the final movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.
1. Mr. Sushansky, a favorite of area audiences, has been widely applauded
for his compelling musical personality, solid violin technique and
beautiful tone. After making his television debut at age 12 when he
appeared on Showtime with Marvin Hamlisch, Mr. Sushansky was just
15 when he performed with the NY Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. He
has appeared with orchestras world wide and has been featured on many
radio and television programs.
Other program highlights include the Orchestra’s performance
of Sousa’s rousing Stars & Stripes and Liberty Bell, Air
from Overture No. 3 in D by Bach-Stokowski, and Copland’s Fanfare
for the Common Man. The thunder of cannons and Tchaikovsky’s
1812 Overture brings the festive evening to a close, accompanied by
Zambelli Internationale’s dazzling fireworks display.
Concert-goers are reminded to wear comfortable clothing and walking
shoes, bring wet weather gear, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on,
a picnic dinner, drinks and a flashlight. Canopies and beach umbrellas
are permitted until the concert begins. Food and souvenir concessions
and portable restrooms, including handicapped-accessible facilities,
are available on the premises. Shuttle buses will be running from
the C&O Canal parking lot located on Route 34 in Sharpsburg to
the battlefield for a nominal fee.
The Celebration sponsors for the Salute to Independence are F&M
Bank and the National Park Service. Sponsorship is also provided by
Antietam Cable Television, The Herald-Mail Newspapers and Mack Trucks
Powertrain Division. Additional funding for the event comes from the
American Legion Clopper-Michael Post #10 and the Boonsboro American
Legion.
