Citicorp Sponsors 20th Annual Maryland Symphony Orchestra
Youth Concerts
Hagerstown, MD… On Wednesday, April
21, at 11:00 am and Thursday, April 22, at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, fourth
graders from public, private and home-schools in the region will attend
the 20th annual Citicorp Youth Concerts. Presented by the Maryland
Symphony Orchestra and sponsored by Citicorp, the concerts will be
held at the Maryland Theatre, 21 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD.
Centering on musical themes and variations, this year’s concert
is entitled “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”
Led by Music Director and Conductor Elizabeth Schulze, the 60-piece
orchestra will perform Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla by Mikhail
Glinka and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin
Britten. Ms. Schulze will also narrate the Britten piece. Students
attending the concert will learn how recognizable melodies can be
changed in a variety of ways.
The Maryland Symphony Orchestra Guild assembles teacher packets and
student guides and distributes them to tri-state area elementary music
teachers prior to the concerts. The materials, which help to prepare
students for their concert experience, include information about the
orchestra, the instruments, the composers, the program to be performed
and appropriate concert etiquette.
Approximately 3600 students from Allegany, Carroll, Franklin, Frederick
and Washington Counties in Maryland, Berkeley and Jefferson Counties
in West Virginia, and schools in Fairfield, Greencastle, Willow Hill,
Mercersburg, St. Thomas, Scotland and Waterfall, Pennsylvania, will
attend the Youth Concerts. |
