MSO Announces Winners of “Side By Side” &
Student Soloist Auditions
HAGERSTOWN, MD – The Maryland Symphony
Orchestra announces the winners of two new competitions for young
musicians. Six music students will perform “side by side”
with MSO musicians at the annual Citi Youth Concerts on May 24 and
25, 2006, and a student violinist has been chosen to perform as soloist
at the concerts. Students from Washington, Frederick, Franklin, Berkeley,
Jefferson and Morgan Counties, as well as students of current and
former MSO musicians, were eligible to audition for these performance
opportunities.
Side-by-side winners are Quinn Gelestino, clarinet, from North Hagerstown
High School, Akane Fakuda, cello, from Saint James School, Heather
Carbaugh, trumpet, from South Hagerstown High School, Elizabeth Pack,
flute, from Ellicott City, Kelley Medcalf, clarinet, from Stephens
City, VA, and Christa Hoover, violin, from Greencastle, PA. Eleven-year-old
Madison Vest from Northern Virginian is the winner of the student
soloist competition. A violin student of Victor Danchenko, Madison
will perform the Rondo movement from Mozart’s “Haffner
Serenade.”
Led by Music Director and Conductor Elizabeth Schulze, the Maryland
Symphony Orchestra, now its 24th season, is the area’s premiere
professional orchestra, dedicated to providing musical performances
and programs that educate and entertain while enhancing the cultural
environment of Western Maryland and the surrounding region.
