The Maryland Symphony Orchestra Announces Student Auditions
The Maryland Symphony Orchestra, under
the direction of Elizabeth Schulze, announces two new performance
opportunities for young musicians. Selected music students will perform
side by side with MSO musicians at the annual Citi Youth Concerts
on May 24 and 25, 2006, and a student violinist will be chosen to
perform as soloist at the concerts. Auditions for both the side by
side program and student violinist will be held on March 11, 2006
at the South Hagerstown High School. Students from Washington, Frederick,
Franklin, Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties, as well as students
of current and former MSO musicians, are eligible.
Students in grade 11 or 12 can audition
for the opportunity to play side-by-side with professional musicians
during the May 24th and 25th Citi Youth Concerts. Because of the requirements
of the music, only the following instruments are eligible: violin,
viola, cello, flute, bass, oboe, clarinet (in A), bassoon, horn and
trumpet. Applicants will be provided with audition music (The 1st
movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 1 and the Marriage of Figaro Overture.)
The MSO is also looking for a talented
student violinist to play the Rondo movement from Mozart's Haffner
Serenade. Students through grade 12 are eligible to audition. The
winner will perform with the orchestra during the Citi Youth Concerts,
and will receive a $100 honorarium.
Students who are interested in auditioning
for either the side by side or student violinist competitions should
obtain a recommendation from their private teacher and submit it,
along with a completed application, to the Maryland Symphony Orchestra
office at 13 South Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD, 21740. The side
by side application is available at www.marylandsymphony.org/sidebyside
application.doc The student violinist application can be downloaded
at www.marylandsymphony.org/violinist application.doc
Upon receipt of the application, music
will be sent to the student for audition preparation. Applications
should be submitted by February 17.
Students, parents or teachers who have questions about the auditions
can contact Sharon Buck-Ahrens, MSO Orchestra Manager, at 301-797-4000.
