Gorenman to Perform Beethoven's "Emperor" at the Maryland Theatre

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – April 21, 2017 – The 35th anniversary season of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra comes to a close as internationally acclaimed pianist Yuliya Gorenman will perform Beethoven’s (“Emperor”) Concerto No. 5, with the MSO, Elizabeth Schulze conducting, on Saturday May 13 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 14 at 3:00 p.m. at the historic Maryland Theatre. Tickets range from $15 - $65 and are available at marylandsymphony.org or by calling 301-797-4000.

In addition to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Together, they represent two of the most recognizable pieces of music ever written.

This final weekend is coupled with “A 35th Anniversary Celebration,” a special event to celebrate 35 years of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. On Saturday, concertgoers will be treated to a complimentary wine tasting, featuring Big Cork Vineyards, Knob Hall and Red Heifer wineries, hors d’oeuvres, and birthday cake in the courtyard of the Maryland Theatre and on the adjacent block of South Potomac Street. Full pours of wine will be available for purchase. The pre-concert festivities on Saturday will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will continue after the conclusion of the concert. The event is free for all attendees of the Saturday evening concert. The Sunday, May 14 concert does not include pre or post-concert activities.

Award-winning American pianist Yuliya Gorenman has been rightfully called “a pianist without fear.”  Now firmly established in her performing career, Gorenman first achieved international acclaim in 1995 as a prizewinner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Belgium. Since then, she has been continually invited to perform solo, chamber, and orchestral concerts throughout the world, earning consistent praise for her artistic fire, extraordinary virtuosity, and the depth of her interpretations.

Gorenman is hailed as one of the most exciting Beethoven interpreters of her generation. Her sold-out performances of all the Beethoven piano sonatas have garnered critical acclaim. She has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic of Flanders, the Liege Philharmonic, and many other orchestras and chamber music ensembles. She has appeared at the Kennedy Center, the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, and many other venues. Gorenman has recorded all the Beethoven piano concerti and the Triple Concerto live with the Bavarian Chamber Orchestra and conductor Philip Greenberg in France and Switzerland. Her recent live performances and recordings have been broadcast on NPR and WETA. Gorenman joined the Recording Academy (Grammy) and served as an advisor for the Board of Governors of the Washington, DC, chapter of the Recording Academy.

“A Fifth of Beethoven” is made possible through the generosity of Dr. & Mrs. Stephen Hood, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Henderson, and the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. The “35th Anniversary Celebration” is underwritten by Mercedes-Benz of Hagerstown, Ewing Oil, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, and Mrs. Theron Rinehart.

Tickets for the concert range from $15 to $65 for adults and children and full-time students (K-12) attend FREE.
