Often described as the greatest piano concerto ever written, Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is a musical masterpiece. With beautiful phrases and flowing chords, glorious melodies create a dialogue between the orchestra and soloist that is simply divine. Having performed to high praise in concert halls around the country, pianist Andrew Staupe brings his powerful and passionate performance style to the Maryland Theatre to perform with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Staupe is emerging as one of the distinctive voices of a new generation of pianists. In 2012 Andrew made his Carnegie Hall debut to critical acclaim, for which New York Concert Review raved “Staupe gave a brilliant performance, handling the virtuosic demands with apparent ease… I was stunned- this was one of the most incredible performances… A once in a lifetime performance!”

This program will also feature American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes’ The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan. Griffes orchestrated and elaborated this piece as a symphonic poem. Its dreamy, evocative quality makes it his most popular and successful work. The concert concludes with Strauss’ magnificently orchestrated Don Juan. Romance fills the air as the lustiness and exuberance of youth is on display in the orchestral fireworks that open this piece yielding to a soaring love song featuring multiple lyrical solos.

Join us at the Maryland Theatre for a weekend of romantic music. A perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day with a loved one!
