Mr.
Wells has been principal trombonist with the MSO since 1997.
While working on his bachelor's degree at the Peabody Conservatory,
he performed frequently with Pro Musica Rara and the Baltimore
Symphony. Since 1993, his career has included appearances
with the Janacek Festival in Munich, the Washington Opera,
the Baltimore Symphony, the National Chamber Orchestra, the
Harrisburg Symphony, the Kansas Brass Quintet, the Bay Street
Brassworks, the Saturday Brass Quintet, and the Charlie Byrd
Trio.
From 1980-1993, Mr. Wells
was a member of the Annapolis Brass Quintet, America's first
full-time brass quintet. The ensemble's frequent tours included
Europe, the Far East, Central America, the Middle East and
all fifty states of the U.S. The ensemble also has made radio
recordings in most of the major European radio centers, including
Brussels, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Berlin, and Stuttgart.
As founders of the International Brass Quintet Festival, the
Annapolis Brass Quintet performed with numerous acclaimed
guest ensembles, including the American Brass Quintet, the
New York Brass Quintet, The Oslo Brass Quintet, and Concert
Arban. The quintet was instrumental in expanding the brass
chamber repertoire, commissioning works that resulted in performances
or recordings with artists as diverse as the Manhattan String
Quartet, American String Quartet, New York Woodwind Quintet,
the Western Wind Vocal Ensemble, New York City Opera mezzo-soprano
Elaine Bonazzi, harpist Heidi Lehwalder, and the Charlie Byrd
Trio.
In 2000, Mr. Wells performed
Creston's Fantasy for solo trombone and orchestra with the
Frederick Symphony. That same year he appeared as one of the
MSO soloists in Martin's Concerto for Seven Winds. He has
been an active educator, serving as an adjunct member of the
Towson University faculty as well as Assistant Professor of
Trombone at the University of Kansas. Mr. Wells is currently
Assistant Professor of Trombone at Shenandoah Conservatory
and is in the final stages of a doctoral degree at the University
of Maryland at College Park.
